Fruit print – we are leaving a good print

Within the Erasmus+ TAFTE project, a lecture was organised in our school which was conducted by the originator and a leader of FruitPrint project. It was connected with planting fruit trees.The aim of the action is to bring back perennial plants as a more balanced source of food. The operations assume creating a live food bank of genes and leaving further generations a precious variety of plants which we inherited from our ancestors. We want the planted trees to make the school community as well as our well-wishers be happy admiring and taking a closer look at the trees and trying their fruit. The tree species are recorded in the database of FruitPrint.pl and in the future students, graduates, parents and citizens will be able to take some samples and inoculate them in their gardens. As part of the campaign we planted Lithuanian apple tree, species of Pepin Parker, Zuccalmagio Renette, Holsteiner Rosenhager and pear trees (Early Shu and Clapp’s Favourite).

It should be remembered that not only do fruit trees provide us with oxygen, shade, peace and quiet but they are also a natural habitat and a food source for many animals. A long-lived apple tree may bear apples for even a century and a long-lived pear tree for 300 or 400 years! Each of them can bear as many as a few hundreds kilogrammes of fruit a year. Full of taste and nutritional value, they will be a remarkable opposite to genetically modifed food.
